The research focus of the Core Facility Hard Tissue and Biomaterial Research, Karl Donath Laboratory is the morphological, histological and histomorphometric assessment of preclinical and clinical studies for research on bone substitute materials, biomaterials, implants and diseases of the oral cavity, as well as basic osteological research.
Our Research Focus:
- Bone Regeneration: We are evaluating innovative treatment methods to enhance bone healing.
- Optimization of Bone Augmentation Materials: Modifications to these materials are being examined for their impact on bone growth, particularly for future implant placement.
- Improving Osseointegration of Implants: Research is being conducted into how the integration and long-term load-bearing capacity of dental implants in the jawbone can be optimized.
- Genetic Mutations: We conduct radiologic and histologic studies to biologically and clinically understand the changes in teeth and bone caused by genetic mutations in transgenic animals.
- Evolutionary and Forensic Osteology and Anthropology - Infantile Cranial Development: Using high-resolution micro-computed tomography (microCT), we study the growth and development of the infant skull.
Applied Methods
- Production of undecalcified histological thin sections: Highly accurate histological thin-ground sections are produced using the sawing-grinding technique established by Karl Donath, allowing detailed, standardised and reproducible analysis.
- Virtual histology: Using special microscope systems, we produce image files at any magnification, which can be easily made available digitally for virtual microscopy.
- MicroCT scans and 3D reconstructions: We use high-resolution microCT scans to generate 3D representations of target structures and subsequent analysis
